Needless to say, most of what he wound up riding was young colts or horses with issues. Time and time again he found myself in the dirt with something bent, and soon began to realize that there’s got to be a better way because horses are supposed to be fun to ride.

It was his love for horses and riding that kept the learning desire alive. Much of what he began to learn came from local trainers and ranch-hands that picked up riding skills here and there. Slowly he did the same, picking brains and putting together what he thought would work for the situation at hand. “At first, I thought they didn’t want to lend a hand, and then I realized that they didn’t know anything about horses. That’s when I took the horse journey.”
The journey followed years of attending various professional clinics, private lessons, and what he calls, “Distant Learning.” Today, most of what Ty applies towards horsemanship involves a straightforward, common sense approach that allows insight into horse behavior and ultimately the goal of partnership. Knowledge, patients, and persistence are what he takes to the pen, “Horses have teaching abilities, and that we have to respect their ways first, only then can we ask them to better our lives.”

In addition to conducting clinics and demonstrations, Ty will travel to horse owner’s homes to help clients with their horses and is known to take on tough challenges. Ty’s horsemanship philosophy involves knowledge and the in-depth understanding between horse and rider, these key ingredients will provide the confidence needed.
Ty is a native Dinē/Paiute that grew up in various homes in central California and Utah. He now resides in Flagstaff, AZ.

Once Midge and Cathy met and saw Dawna’s training methods, she vowed to articulate those methods so herding training was clearer to the dogs and handlers. She co-founded the ICE Training program with Dawna Sims. Cathy follows the ICE principles in her training and her dog training facility in New River, AZ is an ICE certified training facility. Cathy works with all breeds.

Cathy’s first trial was in 2008 and since then she has had a great track record in all of the herding venues including 6 Working Trial Dog Champions, over 50 High in Trials and two Most Promising Started dogs who are now working at advanced levels. Cathy is an American Herding Breed Association (AHBA) judge and in addition to private lessons, Cathy teaches a number of classes that are designed to assist in the success of herding for the dog and the handler. Her classes are known for their high energy, fun format. Cathy’s teaching philosophy is the more you laugh, the more you learn! Cathy spends October through May in Arizona and for the last two years, has spent June through September in Durango, CO. To see a full list of Cathy’s accomplishments and learn more, visit www.icetecsouth.weebly.com.
